The Donnie Smith Gibson Chopper
What’s better than Rock 'n' Roll and custom sleds? Not sure, but this is pretty good!
Three of the custom bike world's best builders teamed up with legendary guitar manufacturer Gibson to build three motorcycle-themed guitars and the bikes to match them. Dave Perewitz, Donnie Smith, and Arlen Ness each designed and built the Gibson themed combos that were unveiled at the 2004 Daytona Bike Week.
The "Three Kings of Customs" brought their designs to Gibson in November 2003. Ness created the concept guitar with his logo and built a chopper.
"Choppers are real popular right now. I figured we might as well go with something real popular so we built that style of bike," Ness explained. "We used a lot of our accessories and did the sheet metal work. We made the tank big so there would be a nice area to paint the guitar on the top of the tank."
Dave Perewitz got on the horn with another Hall of Famer---Aerosmith. After discussing design with them Perewitz went with a 1957 Les Paul Goldtop look alike that is accented by one of his signature paint jobs.
Donnie Smith's guitar is heavily influenced by his motorcycle background. His design resembles the gas tank from the Gibson chopper - complete with gas cap. The oval shaped body has a pearl orange base coat of paint coupled with blue flames, which really bring the guitar to life.
Each bike-guitar combo was revealed to over 150 VIPs and members of the press including, television crews from Speed Vision, E! Entertainment and the Travel Channel during Bike Week. Members of Lynyrd Skynyrd added an even more Rock n' Roll ambiance by helping with the unveiling.
