Biker's Choice - Bike In A Box

Do you have an itch to build your own bike? Then make sure you get out to the Bike Show. Biker's Choice will be there to show you how it gets done. Click here for tickets.

Gary Nordlund, VP at Biker’s Choice, began a great odyssey by building his first bike from the parts in the Biker’s Choice catalog. The pieces were collected and matched up in his dining room over the course of 6 months.

The deal with the boss? Out of the dining room by Thanksgiving.

Gary moved the pieces to a buddy’s garage. With a lot of help from a lot of friends, Gary’s bike took shape. It required 5 days of assembly, 2 days of wiring and a day of tweaking.

BLUE BIKE OBJECTIVES

1. Everything out of the Biker’s Choice catalog

a. Top quality components b. Keep it as easy to build as possible (use kits and complete components where possible - including everything except for bolts and washers, only about 100 total parts were purchased)

2. Learn throughout the process

a. Each part was picked individually
b. Read V-Twin mags, Clymer FXR/FLT, Tim Remus’ How to Build a Kit Bike

3. Rideable

a. FXR frame with rubber-mounted drive train (they say you can’t beat the old FXRs),
b. Solid machined wheels (these won’t throw a spoke),
c. 13.5" twin shocks with 4-position pre-load and 5-position rebound damping,
d. Fork sliders (not as pretty as springers, but functional)
e. S&S SSW+ 4 1/8" by 4 1/8" (shorter stroke, lower compression, electronic compression release),
f. Floorboards (baggers have floorboards for a reason),
g. 6-speed tranny (it sounds good on paper),
h. Enclosed primary (good for keeping fingers intact),
i. 34 degree neck, 3 degree trees, 34.5" forks, 13.5" shocks, 16" wheels should yield a 4.8" trail (at least that is what the computer guy’s calculations say)
j. Single-fire ignition (yes, someone had to explain this to me),
k. Permanently mounted Windvest windscreen,
l. Detachable Kenny Day fairing (the best of both worlds - the fairing fits over the top of the Windvest windscreen)

4. "Fat" (not a comment about the owner)

a. 16 inch wheels front and rear,
b. 150 front tire (this is a true front tire built for the Yamaha Royal Star) with 41 mm wide glide forks,
c. Minimal 21-inch front fender shows off the front tire (this barely covers the tire’s contact patch),
d. 180 rear tire (with full size, 1 1/2 inch belt),
e. Minimal rear fender shows off the rear tire,
f. 6 gallon, non-stretched, OEM-style tank,
g. 2 1/4 inch short drag pipes,
h. The Skulker 34 degree frame plus 3 degree trees also pushes the fat front tire farther out

5. "Convertible"

a. Inter-changeable seats (Danny Gray solo, Corbin dual touring),
b. Detachable Kenny Day fairing (mounts to 41mm clamps on the forks)

6. Other Styling Considerations

a. Rear turn signals act as brake lights (the Thunder Heart Universal wiring kit does this),
b. Everything is chromed or polished,
c. All cables and hoses have the same finish,
d. Visible rear shock springs,
e. Solid aluminum wheels with minimal "spokes" (going for a simpler, cleaner look),
f. Clean front end (clean triple trees, hidden fork plugs, hidden fork stop),
g. T-bars with an 8" rise keep the line of the front forks,
h. Internal handlebar wiring,
i. Small handlebar-mounted combo speedo/tach,
j. Keep the engine visible (coil, oil filter and horn are mounted away from the engine),
k. Bullet lights,
l. Everything is powder coated bright blue (durable finish - 21 pieces on the bike were powder coated - and given the minimal fenders, there is not much canvas for a graphic paint job anyway)
